The competition is open to all persons satisfying the following conditions:
  • Be of African origin
  • Reside in Africa
  • Be the sponsor of a project in one of the three following categories: entrepreneur, local authority or non-trading company
  • Sponsor a project that is already in progress
If a candidate does not satisfy these conditions, the organisers reserve the right not to review the application

There are two possible ways to submit an application:

Either a person wishing to be a candidate in the competition fills out the application form, or a person wishing to support a candidate fills out the sponsor application. Later, the organisers will contact the sponsored person to encourage him to submit his application.

"The call for candidates for the next edition of the Harubuntu Competition is closed since April. The call for candisates for the next edition will open in december 2008 on the site."

The selection will take place in three phases:

End of April 2008: pre-selection

Those applications that do not satisfy the participation conditions (see "who is concerned?") or that do not answer the application questions will be rejected.

May 2008: Selection of a dozen candidates by the jury; based on the following points :

  • Clear description of the project
  • The project’s durability
  • The project’s socioeconomic and environmental impact
  • Localisation
  • Innovation and originality
  • Use of the prize

August 7th, 2008 : Based on meetings held with the applicants and field missions, the winner will be selected for each of the three following categories: entrepreneur, local authority and non-trading company.

The jury's decision shall be final.

  • M. Hassan Zaoual : Professor of economics at the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale in Dunkirk
  • M. Jean Kabuta : PhD in linguistics and African literature and professor at the University of Ghent
  • M. Wamu Oyatambwe : "Quality support and methodology" co-ordinator of the Belgian Federation of French and German- speaking NGOs (ACODEV)
  • M. Cherif Elvalide Seye : Publication director of the magazine 52
  • M. Jean-Pierre Elong Mbassi : Secretary-General of the United Cities & Local Governments of Africa (CGLUA)
  • Mme Falila Gbadamassi : Journalist, Afrik.com
  • M. Amobe Mevegue : host of the programme ‘Plein Sud’ on RFI
  • M. François Milis : Secretary-General, Echos Communication

At the prize ceremony, October 7th, 2008 , three prizes will be handed out:: the entrepreneur prize, the local authority prize and the non-trading company prize.

Entrepreneur prize:
  • Media coverage in Europe and in Africa and, more specifically, producing and broadcasting a report on the winner and its project
  • Financial amount: EUR 10,000
  • Training and support by Echos Communication on the following subject: "Improving the ability to work with others".
Local authority prize:
  • Media coverage in Europe and in Africa and, more specifically, producing and broadcasting a report on the winner and its project
  • Financial amount: EUR 10,000
  • Training and support by Echos Communication on the following subject: "Improving the ability to work with others".
Non-trading company prize:
  • Media coverage in Europe and Africa and, more specifically, producing and broadcasting a report on the winner and its project
  • Financial amount: EUR 10,000
  • Training and support by Echos Communication on the following subject: "Improving the ability to work with others".

9 November 2007, 2-5 pm: press conference marking the start of the competition at the Brussels City Hall during International Solidarity Month

1 December 2007: opening of applications on the Internet site

25 April 2008: closing of applications

End of April 2008: Pre-selection

May 2008: Selection of a dozen candidates by the jury

June – September 2008: Introduction of the selected candidates through programmes, interviews and online articles

June – end of August 2008: field missions and meetings with candidates

7 August 2008: vote of the jury and selection of the winner for each of the categories

September - October 2008: producing reports on the winners

20 October 2008: Award ceremony in Brussels
